According to Japanese legend, Ōnamazu (大鯰) is a giant catfish who dwells in the murky depths beneath the islands of Japan and causes earthquakes. The god Kashima guards him with a watchful eye, restraining him with a stone. When Kashima lets his guard fall, Ōnamazu thrashes about, causing violent earthquakes.
